ARGH!

30 10 2006

The title says it all. Frustration is killing me here. It kills me to see people do a review, in this case Ubuntu 6.10, and kill it, say it sucks, or it is horrible (only to get Google hits, which one site confessed to), yet a majority of the sites, who usually crank out decent reviews, give it 3 thumbs up (see, we need “Ubuntu for Everyone”, the aliens are thumbin’ up with a trio).

Then there is the term “Fanboy.” Which every person who hits up the intarweb with their elite {qwerty|dvorak|azerty}’ness, is a “Fanboy” of some type. I will admit, I am a “Fanboy” of Linux! Right now, my thing that I enjoy is Ubuntu, well Kubuntu for me since I loooove me some KDE. Anyways, I have messed around for years with distributions such as Red Hat (starting from 5x), LFS, Mandrake, SuSE (before Novell), Debian, and Slackware. Out of my favorites, it was Debian and Slackware. Ubuntu came along, and at first I didn’t like it, but I enjoyed the community and how they weren’t the typical RTFM crowd which 90% of the Linux crowd still is in a lot of ways.

I am not going to sit here and try and cram Ubuntu down your throat, I might force feed you, but there will be no cramming. I think, now this is my opinion, so feel free to leave those amazing flame comments that most of you “anonymous” people do (ya, blog.nixternal.com is a big-brother site, im selling your information for peanuts), but the flaming we tend to see concerning Ubuntu stems from jealousy. Ya, I said it! There are people who dislike something because it is popular, or the “in” thing. I did the same thing with Ubuntu last year, and it wasn’t until I actually decided to give it a run. I am not a GNOME user whatsoever, and it was a GNOME version that drew me in. And then I seen where Jonathan Riddell stepped up with his blog post about a KDE version. At first that was rough, so I went with OpenSuSE and Mepis in the mean time, it wasn’t until the Dapper Flight releases that I got hooked.

So call me a “Fanboy”, as it isn’t that I only believe in the greatness of the Operating System itself, but the philosophy and the people behind the scenes that sell it for me. This isn’t to say one day something else comes along and I switch, I just promise if I do switch, it will be Linux. I understand that whole “ewww Microsoft”, and “Micro$shaft” is sh!t, but to do this within the Open Source community is nuts. Oh well, I am gonna go RTFM and STFU I guess

forget spell check, I am going to bed ;) <- Jono that winky is for you bud!

Un Dia Restante Chicago

26 10 2006

Thanks Google! Thanks Fede! Anyways, one day remaining Chicago! Saturday, October 28th, 2006 is the big day. The Ubuntu Chicago Local Community Team is gathering for a day of presentations, demonstrations, and Edgy Celebrations. $10 allows you full access to everything we are doing. The $10 is to help cover the cost of the event.

Presentations are looking good, so far we have: Organization, Marketing, Support, Edgy, Contributing, Gaming, Teens & OSS, 3D Graphics, Game Programming in Ubuntu, Crossover Office, Cyberlink, Kubuntu, Launchpad, Cedega, AIGLX (Beryl?), Debootstrapping, KMail, GNU Privacy Guard, and many more. Geek fest is on!

If you are interested in making it out, we will be located at the Best Western on 1231 Lee Street, Des Plaines, IL 60018. We will be there from about 11am (earlier if you are presenting, I will be there between 9am and 10am) until possibly 8pm that evening.

Head on over to http://chi.ubuntu-us.org for more information on the meeting, and if you want to come out, we ask that you please sign-up. Thanks again, and I can’t wait to see you all come Saturday!

The Edgy Release Blues

26 10 2006

I woke up this morning,

My eyes were bloodshot red,

I had the brain pain,

With a deep pounding in my head,

So I opened up my email,

And I read all the news,

My day is much better,

Even with the Edgy Release Blues!

Ubuntu! Kubuntu! Edubuntu! Xubuntu!  Download them while they are hot!

Thank You Everyone!

25 10 2006

Well, 6.10 is upon us. That is Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ichthux 6.10 if you follow the community here. That means, that the documentation is completed, the packages are uploaded, and the bugs are being fixed.

No matter which distrobution I was working on, the 6.10 release schedule was very tight. I think I may have bit off just a little bit more than I can chew during this session, but in doing so, I lost more hair, yet I learned a lot of cool things. I am a MOTU in disguise now, as I understand it a lot more now (Thanks to Brandon Holtsclaw, Sarah Hobbs, Jonathan Riddell, Anthony Mercatante, Daniel T. Chen, and Jordan Mantha), Docbook is easy now, Matthew East’s scripts still confuse me, however they work, and the evil Canadian brothers, Corey (UWN Junky!!!) and Brian Burger (thanks Brian for those sick tux & Kennedy jokes).

New for this cycle, for me at least, was working with some cool people in the education community and getting to help out with the Edubuntu Handbook. Many thanks to Susan Stewart, Richard Weideman , Pete Savage, Mario Danic, and Oliver Grawert. Also, thanks to the many Handbook contributors, sorry for not knowing your names, but your IRC nicknames will work, sbalneav, BonBonTheJon, willvdl, and others (sorry if I forgot you).

So, if you happen to walk by the Kubuntu Documentation and/or the Ichthux Documentation, and notice an error or two, that was more than likely me. File a bug report, and I will fix it as soon as possible. Thanks also to the Ubuntu Chicago Team! Jason is the man, as he has single handedly setup our venue for this weeks meeting, RJ our resident hacker ;) , Freddy, Andrew, Max, Brian, Carson, rr72 (wth is your name?), sharms (about time you blog again), Pyro, and Adam (where are you at now Mr. GNOME?).

I just wanted to take this little bit of time and say thank you. I am looking forward to 7.04, the Feisty Fawn, and hopefully a little more responsibility to go along with it. Thanks again everybody for making 6.10 KICK ASS! I look forward to working with each and everyone of you in the future. Take care, and God Bless <><
