AFAIK Zend is the company that has been responsible for the design of recent PHP versions, but almost everybody who complains about the Novell, Xandros, Linspire, etc. deals is still using PHP without any comment... I am sure that CNR is badly coded because it has never been able to install anything on my PC and it seems to take up huge amounts of system resources. I think that we (Ubuntu) should end the partnership because as far as I can see the deal for Ubuntu is just like buying and airline for the free peanuts. I moved from SUSE after the Novell deal and it looks bad when I say to my friends (as I try to convert them to Linux) that my OS is MS partnership free like Ubuntu is.
