KDE 4 Plasmoid Fun

November 23rd, 2007  |  Published in KDE  |  20 Comments

Well, it is almost bedtime, but before I went, I wanted to show off my KDE 4 desktop as it stands right now. Note, I do not use all of those plasmoids, I was just playing to see what all was working. Thus far, weather and temperature (cpu) are the only ones not working for me, but I am sure after further tweaking I can get them to work. Well, w/o further ado, here you go:

KDE 4 Desktop

What you are seeing is the trashcan, battery indicator, network connection, calculator, comic strip from the web, clock, hardware info, and KDE twitter. So, now that I have a Twitter account, feel free to follow me.

Seems to be a KDE4 cover-up conspiracy. Two posts on Planet Ubuntu this week professing to show us the desktop, and no full-size pictures to be found yet. ;-)

KDE4 is really starting to look very usable. I’m trying to compile it on my Gentoo machine, but I keep running into errors.

BAH! Sorry everyone. When it uploaded, it was set to 600, I fixed it on the server. I apologize! Now you can see it all big and stuff :)

@Og: Couple more days…int and I are talking about how to install the KDE4 packages :) But I do have it built from SVN on Foresight as well :)

Ahh, and everyone knows me as the “guy who hates firefox”, the reason I have firefox, just in case I get challenged, is because Konqueror was constantly crashing on me last night. Hell, I would hit the letter “p” and it would crash. So I am in the process of rebuilding KDE 4 on my laptop to see if that got straightened out.

Is it possible to get rid of that thing in the upper right hand corner of the screen with the wrench on it? Is it gray? Is it skinnable? Will it adapt to match the theme of the desktop? When I install a theme package, will it be themed along with the rest of the window decorations? Will it have transparency? Can it be smaller or shaped differently? Will it be shiny like the rest of KDE4? Could it be in the notification area verses the corner of my desktop? Will it go away in the final release of KDE4?

I am just curious… This is the only major thing I am not liking from the videos and screenshots that I have looked at so far. It doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the desktop. Otherwise, KDE4 is looking pretty sweet!

    Thanks in advance,
    BrokenCrystal

@BrokenCrystal: I don’t know if the Plasma toolbar thing will be there after the release or if it is just temporary. I haven’t looked into it much nor paid it much attention. Like you, I hope something can be done with it if it does stay.

    Thanks anyway…
