Don’t forget help!

9 02 2007

https://help.ubuntu.com & https://help.ubuntu.com/community are two more locations for instant support gratification. This is in response to Michael Stemle, Jr.’s post.

https://help.ubuntu.com is the system documentation that is already installed on your Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and/or Xubuntu system.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community is yet another wiki, this time for the entire community to contribute their documentation to. So if you want to let the world know how you got something specific setup, head on over there and setup a wiki page.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com is more or less the staging area for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu development. You will notice a lot of things specific to development, artwork, specifications and such.

No matter if you work on the Community Wiki or the Development/Staging Wiki, there is a Styling Guide to follow. If Wiki hacking is your thing, you might be interested in the Ubuntu Wiki Team. They are a part of the Ubuntu Documentation Project and communicate on the ubuntu-docs mailing list and on IRC in #ubuntu-doc.

NOW! Calling all documentors! We need your help with content in the Edubuntu Handbook as well as the new Kubuntu System Documentation. The Doc Team utilizes DocBook XML however if plain text works for you, it works for me. You can always send the text files directly to me and after a quick run through I will manually put them to DocBook files. We work from a Subversion Repository so there are only a select group of individuals who can commit,  however anyone can check out, edit, and submit patches to ubuntu-docs(at)lists.ubuntu.com.

If anyone is interested in helping out, try and stop by #ubuntu-doc on IRC (chat.freenode.net | port 8001). Thanks everyone!

Does the bling bling sing sing for Intel?

6 02 2007

I am sorry for the title, I know it is horrible, but please bear with me and look past that :)

OK, here is what I want to know. Are you running Beryl with an Intel 945GM chipset? If you are running Ubuntu or Kubuntu please let me know. As most already know I am a KDE user so Kubuntu is my flavor of choice. So if you are using Kubuntu with a combination similar to mine, please let me know your experiences. Thank you so much!

OK, for those of you going “but nixternal you preach composite is crap,” I want to not only see the hoopla for myself, but Beryl is a positive thing for gaining switchers. I am keeping my free software stance, but I feel that in order to gain switchers we need to show them the bling bling. So if you are a FSF or GNU advocate, please don’t get into a pissing contest, as I agree with 99.9% of your philosophy. So hit me with the goods, it would be great to just leave a comment to this so I can bookmark and pimp it for those who might be wondering the same thing I am right now. Once again, thanks everyone, and you are the reason this community kicks ass!

UPDATE:  I apologize, but when I brought up the FSF/GNU stuff I forgot to add the part about ATI and NVidia driver. I apologize.

My hats off to you…

Ubuntu Canada. From the pictures it looks like you did a great job. I was not expecting to see this though.

Tux owns Bill

I did not know you guys had a Tux that damn big. I love how it is overlooking the MS display with a look of disgust on his face. I read the bogus publicity and I am sorry, that show of force I know grabbed more than 1 persons attention. If you successfully converted 1 person, I feel you did your job. That 1 person will got tell another person and so on. Great job guys. Hey, where can I get one of them big ass penguins? For those of you who want to see more pictures, check out the Flickr images they posted.

Vista Social Engineering

3 02 2007

This is a new one to me and rather humorous for a hack. It seems Vista is flawed, go figure, where a cracker can gain access and run commands on your computer by:

SHOUTING COMMANDS THROUGH THE SPEECH-RECOGNITION FEATURE!

I thought I had heard it all. So if you stumble upon a website and hear “CONTROL ALT DELETE,” don’t panic, as it is meant for a Windows Vista user. This brings social engineering to the computer now, simply amazing. What’s next?

So I take it you use Windows XP?

1 02 2007
“Only in between crashes.”

This is by far my favorite QOTD. Today in one of my classes, an older lady who is in my class asked me a Linux question since I have been dubbed the “campus Linux guru.” If only they knew the truth :) Anyways, I asked about her system specifications and realized her computer was just a few years old. Now of course I asked a stupid question for one, “So I take it you use Windows XP?” Well duh you dummy Rich! And she responded with the above quote. It had myself and the instructor in tears as this was definitely not the expected answer to such question.

So CoDLUG be aware, I have yet another switcher on their way. Not to shabby, this semester alone, 3 weeks into it, I have around 20 people now using either Ubuntu or Kubuntu. So far, these new users have said that Kubuntu is perfect for a person switching from Windows. I am glad they found it relatively easy. The Ubuntu users ask me questions, which I in turn ask in #ubuntu :) They don’t know I am cheating. Also, OpenOffice.org is now a hit at the college as well as Gimp.
