FYI: InfoWorld is horrid

24 10 2007

If you didn’t already know that of course. Anyways, I use the all so familiar iGoogle and have “Ubuntu” select to load up in a block on the page so I can see what everyone is saying. And it never fails that InfoWorld always has an “Ubuntu Sucks” article. Well this week is way different. The guy writing the articles is so biased it isn’t even funny. But he is succeeding. You can look through all of his posts, and he doesn’t have that many comments. Then you can look at his Part 1 through 3 posts and see he has attracted so many people. He is definitely getting his hits on. Well I decided to see what this has written in the past, and right smack dab on his front page is an article about someone ripping in Windows Vista. This is what he had to say about the guy who ripped into Windows:

I just got through reading yet another “Microsoft must abandon Vista to survive” scare pieces at a competitor’s web site. Talk about your lightweight content! This guy didn’t even try to provide any sort of hard data. He just spewed his anti-Microsoft bile all over his blog page. And while I’m by no means a Windows “fanboy,” I simply have to respond to some of the more common bullet “points” that seem to keep cropping up in this type of journalistic flatulence:

Now after reading that, go and read Why Ubuntu Still Sucks Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Everyone one of his attacks are directly at Ubuntu. One of his attacks is against Compiz. And his basis for his attack, a freakin’ YouTube video. Ya, he took what he looks at on his Vista desktop and compared it to a YouTube video. Can you believe these people actually get paid for writing for InfoWorld?

Quick KDE 4 Post

23 10 2007

I just finished setting up KDE 4 from SVN and have been messing around checking it out, and I must say it has gotten to the point where I am going to start running it full time on my desktop. This will allow me to not only follow development much more closely, but it will also allow me to start reporting the bugs I run across, and start fixing some of the bugs I have been seeing. My main project will definitely be KHelpCenter and the Docs and as my time starts to free up a bit more here, I am going to start hitting it a little heavier than I have in the past month or so. So as I go through and do my updates, I plan on documenting my griefs, my joys, and my updates as I roll along. For a parting gift, I will leave you with a quick screenshot of the current Kontact in KDE 4, Konsole running my Irssi screen, and a very addicting game called Knetwalk. Enjoy!

Release Party Pictures

22 10 2007

HERE are some pictures from yesterday’s (Sunday) Ubuntu 7.10 Release Party and Install Fest. It was a good time, and probably the busiest yet. We were interviewed for the local paper and plus I did an interview on Saturday with another news paper. It seems our event was posted in either the Chicago Sun Times or the Daily Herald, as 2 people showed up saying that is how they found out about it. Good to see nobody still reads them papers :)

OpenWeek: Kubuntu Talk

22 10 2007

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 23rd at 21:00 UTC, I will be giving a talk on Kubuntu in #ubuntu-classroom on IRC (Freenode). While working on the talk for tomorrow, I kept trying to word it to fit in with every body’s skill set. Anyways, for those of you showing up tomorrow, what type of background information would you like to see? Just toss out some ideas that I can work with. Thanks!

Want help installing Ubuntu?

21 10 2007

If so, then make your way to the Ubuntu Chicago and College of DuPage Gutsy Release Party and Install Fest. It is now midnight here in Chicago and I have just finished burning a set of CDs for tomorrow. I used some LightScribe love on them, however I rushed the job. I used an Ubuntu label image I found online, but the Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu ones I made. The Xubuntu one isn’t the greatest, only because I couldn’t do the logo like the rest, because of that pesky mouse in the middle, and the last time I checked, a CD was like a donut, it has a hole in the middle :)

Anyways, tomorrow from 10am until 4pm (CST) at the College of DuPage. 425 Fawell Blvd, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. We will be in room SRC 1544, and as long as I don’t forget, I will put up some signage at the 2 main entrances. So if you don’t see a sign, you are in the wrong place, unless it is the roundish looking white building, then you are in the right place. Just come on down to the first floor and have some fun!

HERE are what the CDs look like after LightScribing them. Not the best, but they work :)

Yesterday, while writing the release notes for Kubuntu.org, I asked for some title names by telling people to fill in the blanks. The results? Some of them were pretty funny, and some were pretty frightening, and one I really liked. Here are some for your viewing pleasure:

Kubuntu 7.10 - Cause honestly Why wouldn't you?
Kubuntu 7.10 - Or else the Terrorists have already won

This is what happens when you ask such a question to sleep deprived developers on the eve of release. Anyways, Kubuntu 7.10 is out, it kicks arse, and I am proud to have worked with the greatest group of developers that I have ever worked with. So what are you waiting for, go DOWNLOAD it already!

Thanks to every person who filed a bug report, who fixed a bug, who thought about fixing a bug, who packaged a bug, who repackaged the package to fix that bug, who answered a question on the user lists, who answered a question on IRC, who…ahh hell! Thank You Everyone!!!
